This is definitely the most relaxing and pleasant stop on our tour so far. Guérande is a small “city of character” as the locals call it, which means it’s old and cute. It’s surrounded by a medieval stone wall that has several towers with battlements and slots for shooting arrows out of, and I think most of the buildings inside are just as old. Our B&B (just inside the wall) is only about 200 years old, but it feels very quaint by American standards. I think my favorite corner of the house is the breakfast room, which is filled with antiques like the rest of the place but the walls and ceiling are entirely of glass, so it’s infused with views of the garden and lots of light.
Just outside the back door is a little moss-covered staircase leading up to the top of the city wall that has probably been there for 1000 years. What’s back there?!? I’m bummed that it’s covered by a locked gate; I totally would’ve explored it.
I think Anna’s favorite part is that her room has a loft with a mattress on it. We tried to convince her that she should sleep on the day bed where there’s no chance she’ll fall 8 feet to the ground, but she wouldn’t hear of it. So we read her current favorite bed time story “The Yellow Submarine” and now she’s up there in the loft taking an afternoon nap.
