Our hotel in St. Malo is what the locals call “intra-muros”, which means inside the old city walls. The stone walls helped keep the city safe from invaders, with the help of some forts build on little islands of rock in the ocean. The streets incredibly narrow because they were built for people and horses (long before automobiles were invented) so getting our car close enough to the hotel to unload our bags was “interesting”. It involved a lot of driving at 1 kph behind pedestrian tourists who apparently knew we weren’t about to run them over.
I haven’t written too much about the food here, and that’s overdue. It’s wonderful of course... Brittany is famous for its galettes (savory) and crepes (sweet) and for good reason. I had a great “complète” (egg, cheese, and ham) tonight. Unfortunately Anna doesn’t want to try galettes and that seems to be the only food people serve around here, so we’ve had a hard time find her stuff she likes. Tonight, we got her a pizza with chicken and olives that we thought she’d enjoy, but she fell asleep in the stroller before it came.
Another interesting thing was the harbor: while we were admiring an old pirate frigate, Anna looked into the water and said “there are jellyfish!” Anca was sure that wasn’t true so she told her that it was only trash that she was seeing. But I happened to look and noticed that Anna was right... there were hundreds of moon jellies cruising around under the surface.
(I didn’t get a picture of the jellyfish unfortunately. This is from the web.)
