Lamp Shade

Greg Abbas

This is a smaller project. In my office I have a small table lamp with a Hue bulb in it, so it can make lots of fun colors but the lamp shade had a yellowish color that didn't really show off a lot of the bulb's hues to the fullest. I found the STL for a Print-In-Place Lamp that looked like it would do the trick.

At first I tried to print it with transparent PLA, but I couldn't get a successful print. The filament wouldn't always lay flat — it would sometimes poke up a bit, and then on the next layer the nozzle would catch on it and destroy the print.

At the suggestion of a friend, I tried PETG (because anyway it would be right next to a light bulb, so heat-resistance is important). I also slowed the print speed way down to 25 mm/s, and finally got it to complete successfully! Here's our kitten Fuzzbutt modeling the print.

To hold the shade on my lamp, I needed some threaded rings to clamp it to the fixture. Luckily, someone has already solved that too... on Thingiverse. I made mine a bit thinner so I could fit one of them above the shade and another one below, to clamp it in place.

Viola! The new shade shows true colors, instead of tinging them yellow.
